NOSFERATU, 1/8 SCALE RESIN
MODEL KIT, SCULPTED BY JOE SIMON

Thomas Hutter travels to Transylvania’s remote Carpathian Mountains to meet a client, Graf Orlok, in his sinister castle. Hutter arrives late, well after dark, and finds his rat-toothed host waiting for him, wearing a hat that covers his ears and clutching a thick ring of keys.

Inside, Hutter eats a late dinner while Orlok reads a letter. Distracted by the midnight chimes of a skeletal clock, Hutter accidentally slices his finger while cutting a piece of bread with a knife. “Ouch!” he cries, then tries to laugh off the blood streaming from his thumb.

Orlok isn’t laughing, though. A wild look of hunger shows on his face as he rises and moves toward his guest. He attempts to take hold of the hand to suck the blood out of the wound, but the repulsed Hutter snatches his hand back and moves away from the table.

Orlok follows, cornering Hutter near his fireplace, where he collapses into a chair. Orlok moves toward him … and Hutter knows no more until the next morning, when he awakens to find fresh punctures on his neck.

MR. HYDE, 1/8 SCALE RESIN MODEL KIT,
SCULPTED BY JOE SIMON

Sir George Carew taunts Henry Jekyll for his nobility. “Your really strong man fears nothing,” he says. “It is the weak one who is afraid of experience. A man cannot destroy the savage in him by denying its impulses. The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. With your youth, you should live — as I have lived. I have memories. What will you have at my age?”

Carew, the father of Jekyll’s fiancée, Millicent, provokes in the younger man a desire “to yield to every evil impulse — yet leave the soul untouched!” His search for a way to do this leads to his creation of a potion that turns saintly Dr. Jekyll … into the despicable Edward Hyde.

Ironically, Hyde so disgusts Carew that he demands Jekyll explain his relationship with the monster. He threatens to object to Jekyll marrying Millicent. This agitates Jekyll into transforming into Mr. Hyde without the potion.

Smiling hugely, laughing through his teeth, Hyde crouches to attack. Carew flees to the courtyard of Jekyll’s house, but Hyde quickly catches up and exuberantly clubs him to death with his walking stick.

Hyde pauses to bask in the moment, gleeful, then delivers a final blow before slinking away.

PHANTOM REPLACEMENT HEAD FOR THE POLAR LIGHTS MODEL KIT, SCULPTED BY CHRIS WOOTEN

James Bama’s colorful monsters have fascinated hobbyists since they first graced the boxes of Aurora model kits more than four decades ago. What wonderful images they are.

I love them all, but the Phantom of the Opera is a particular favorite. The way Bama painted him — green skin, white hair — he was like no other Phantom ever to grace the screen. I know the artwork was inspired by the makeup James Cagney wore in the 1957 film “Man of a Thousand Faces”, but this Phantom is in many ways a unique creation.

In the 1990s, Polar Lights introduced its own model of the Phantom of the Opera. Nice kit, but the head … kinda stunk. Looking at it, I thought it would be cool to turn the kit into the Aurora Phantom, something showing James Bama’s monster at a different dramatic moment.

The Phantom replacement head, sculpted by Chris Wooten, is 1/8 scale, resin, and sells for $15 plus shipping. Please note that the replacement head is made to fit the Polar Lights Phantom, not the Aurora Phantom, and that the plastic kit is not included. Payment by check, money order or PayPal. ALMA, 1/4 SCALE BUST, SCULPTED BY WILLIAM PAQUET

Water runs over the tub’s edge and onto the tile, but the man doesn’t care. He wants an answer from the woman lying face-down on the bed. A minute before, he had asked, “Who are you?” But when he put a hand on her back, felt the chill of her flesh, his question changed.

“What are you?”

She allows him to roll her over to face him, showing him what she is. Moments later, he’s hundreds of feet away, dead and wet and cold.

She is Alma Mobley, and thanks to movie makeup and effects pioneer Dick Smith, she’s the kind of woman who stops the heart … forever.

Read more about her.

Alma, sculpted by William Paquet, is 1/4 scale, resin, and sells for $55 plus shipping. Please note that the bust is an unpainted model kit. Payment by check, money order or PayPal.
